July 15-21: Operation Safe Driver Week
Topics: Safety
July 15-21, law enforcement agencies throughout North America will be actively targeting unsafe driving during Operation Safe Driver Week. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) sponsor the annual event. During Operation Safe Driver Week, there will be increased commercial motor vehicle (CMV) and passenger vehicle traffic enforcement across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The goal is to prevent crashes by identifying unsafe driving, such as:
Speeding
Distracted driving
Texting
Failure to use a seatbelt
Following too closely
Improper lane change
Failure to obey traffic control devices
Last year, CMV safety enforcement officials issued warnings or citations to approximately 20,648 CMV drivers and private passenger-vehicle drivers as part of the week long mobilization. The 2017 top warning/citation issued to CMV drivers was for state and local moving violations (56.7 percent) and for passenger vehicle drivers was for speeding (39.4 percent).
