HOURS OF SERVICE

Hours of Service driving time rules

As the volume increases during Peak, it becomes even more important to remember that FedEx Ground management monitors compliance of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Hours of Service (HOS) maximum driving time rules. It’s important to stay aware of the rules and descriptions:

  • 10-hour: A driver may not drive without first taking 10 consecutive off-duty hours. The driver must take the full 10 consecutive hours off duty. (Nine hours, 59 minutes will result in a 10-hour violation).

  • 11-hour: A driver may drive a total of 11 hours during a period of 14 consecutive hours after the start of shift.

  • 14-hour: A driver may not drive after the end of the 14 consecutive-hour period without first taking 10 consecutive hours off.

  • 8-day/70-hour: A driver may not drive after 70 on-duty hours in eight consecutive days.

  • 30-minute break (LH): Drivers of vehicles 26,001 pounds GVWR or more are required to take a 30-minute break after eight hours on duty.
